Overview
Life Fitness and the fitness industry as whole are not tapping the 60% of adults in the western world who are non-active. Seeking in roads with this audience, Life Fitness commissioned Sapient to discover insight, innovation areas and product ideas that can unlock this potential.

Process
discovery
The first step was to form a hypothesis through secondary research (scientific papers, surveys, and experts opinion). The emerging hypothesis was that fitness offering does not help many who aspire for fitness overcome an inherent barrier to action. The following user research, an ethnographic study that included interviews and observations in fitness context (gyms, outdoor, etc.)with users in various stages of engagemnet with fitness activity (relapsing, active, starting, etc.).
Along an analysis and synthesis, few key insights were uncovered, for example we learned that users view the fitness experience (gyms in particular) as a chore or factory work, While having an idyllic aspiration for a more organic experience (where fitness emerges from fun and joy).
Design
Further synthesis of insight led to innovation drivers that in turn guided along with technology trends ideation for new products and services. Ideas were further clustered into areas and synthesised into plausible concepts that combine few innovation drivers and build on technology trends.
