Overview
Greengame, an early seed startup, partnered with Whatfollows to design a gamified experience that would engage people, cities and brands, in making sustainable living the norm.
As product design partner, I worked with the founders to translate the vision into a a coherent experience and craft an MVP (cross platform app) that would engage users in the core of this experience.

Process
Work commenced with interviews of early prototype users. The interview collected feedback about the prototype and gaged on general tech practices and sustainability habits. Through these, three persona stood out - 'Idealists', 'Convivialists' and 'Reward seekers, with each attracted to different features of the prototype and having varying levels of motivation for sustainable living. 'Idealist' were' attracted to automated tracking feature that gave everyday activities a sustainable score, 'Convivialists' were motivated by life quality and showed interest in competing with friends and family, while the potential for incentives resonated well with 'Reward Seekers'.
Building on this insight we created an experience map in search of synergies between persona needs, and rapidly sketched possible experiences, consolidating eventually four concepts:
Concept I (mockup
The first, a playful visualisation of wobbling circles, each representing a category of sustainable impact. The visualisation teases the user to align the circles by adopting sustainable habits.
Concept II (mockup
The second, a loyalty program for sustainable life in which sustainable habits are awarded in game currency allowing users to redeem real rewards or donate earnings for environmental / sustainable causes.
The third, a construction game in which sustainable score was awarded as virtual bricks, allowing users to build a green home placed in a virtual space matching real geographic location.
Concept IV (mockup
The fourth, a self quantification experience, reflected back to users their tracked activities as an environmental persona, inviting them to explore green and not so green habits.
User feedback and business model consideration led to focus on an experience that mixed a more vivid self quantification experience through the sustainable life stream feature, challenges and rewards.
Scrollable sustainable life stream
With the scope of MVP clarified in earlier iterations product design move to higher fidelity of functional flows and U, including sketch mockups and high fidelity prototypes in variuous tools exploring and demonstrating interactive behaviours.
